Season 14 is one of those Necromancer seasons where your first decision matters more than your last paragon point. The class can swing from lazy summon play to burst-heavy boss melting, and the difference usually comes down to how well your Diablo 4 gear supports the build you picked. If you've ever watched a promising setup fall apart because Essence ran dry or a key unique never dropped, you already know why Necro feels so gear-sensitive right now.
What Season 14 actually gives Necromancer players
The good news is that Necromancer doesn't feel locked into one answer. Blood Wave, Golem, Bone Spirit, and Minions are the names that matter most, but Bone Spear, Blood Surge, Blood Lance, Blight, Sever, and Army of the Dead all still have a place depending on your goal. The bad news is that you can't just copy a popular loadout and expect it to fly. Some setups are built for Pit pushing, some are built for boss damage, and some are just there to make leveling less annoying.
  • Blood Wave is the heaviest endgame hitter when the build is fully online.
  • Golem setups are the best fit for players who want summon damage without babysitting every cast.
  • Bone Spirit is the cleaner single-target option for bosses and fast target deletion.
  • Minion Necromancer is still the easiest way to level without fighting the class at every step.
What I wish I knew earlier is that Necromancer doesn't reward half-finished gearing. If you try to force a late-game Blood Wave setup too early, it can feel clunky and thirsty on Essence. A minion route or a more forgiving blood build is usually the smarter progression move until the important pieces drop.
Blood Wave is powerful, but it's not a lazy build
Blood Wave still sits near the top because Hematolagnia turns it into a Core Skill and lets you spam it, which is a big deal for damage pacing. The build leans hard on Overpower stacking, then multiplies that value with tools like Tidal Aspect, Red Blessing, Banished Lord's Talisman, and Dominate. When everything is assembled, it hits like a truck. When one piece is missing, the whole setup can feel awkward fast.
That's the part a lot of players miss. Blood Wave isn't hard because the button presses are complicated; it's hard because the build punishes sloppy resource management. Ring of Starless Skies helps a lot, and until you get there, you'll feel every bad Essence roll. Aspect of Potent Blood, resource cost reduction, and Essence regen are the kind of boring stats that quietly keep the build playable.

That table is basically the Season 14 Necromancer story in a nutshell. Blood Wave has the ceiling, but it also has the most friction. Golem sits in the sweet spot for players who want real endgame value without a sweaty rotation. Minions are still the chillest way to move through progression, even if they won't always be the final answer for pushing the highest tiers.
Golem and Bone Spirit are the two smart alternatives
Golem Necromancer got a real boost this season thanks to Maze of Khan Lim being improved, and that alone makes summon builds feel a lot less like a side project. If you like letting your army do the work while you focus on positioning and survival, this is the cleaner endgame choice. Bone Spirit, on the other hand, is the option for players who want direct burst and stronger boss pressure. It's less forgiving in some fights, but it delivers when targets stop moving.
If I had to give one practical warning, it's this: don't confuse comfort with weakness. A lot of players dismiss summon builds because they look slower, but slower doesn't mean worse if your real goal is consistent clears and less RNG frustration. Hardcore-minded players often like the safer pacing. Faster grinders usually lean toward Blood Wave or Bone Spirit once their loot starts cooperating.
How I'd choose the right Necromancer path
Pick Blood Wave if you want the biggest endgame payoff and you don't mind chasing the right loot. Pick Golem if you want a summon-first setup that still has teeth in Season 14. Pick Bone Spirit if boss farming matters more than lazy clearing. Pick Minions if you're early in progression and want the smoothest path without constantly fighting your own resource bar. And if you're still piecing together your loadout, browsing cheap Diablo 4 gear can save you a lot of time while you wait for the better drops to line up.
